Imagine a busy town called Stratford-upon-Avon, a super long time ago. That's where John Shakespeare lived! He wasn't a king or a knight, but he was a very important person. He made things out of leather, like gloves, and he was also a businessman. He even became the mayor of his town, which is like being the boss of everyone! He had a famous son named William, who became a world-famous writer.
A Busy Life in Town
John Shakespeare worked hard every day. He was a glover, which means he made gloves, and a whittawer, which is someone who works with leather. He was also a politician! He was part of the town council and even got to be the bailiff, the top job, which is like being the mayor today. He was in charge of important town decisions. He had eight children, but sadly, only five grew up.

Life wasn't always easy for John. Sometimes he had lots of money, and sometimes he didn't. We don't know exactly why, but his money troubles came and went. But guess what?
