Key Facts
Meet John, the Idea Maker!
John Rawls was a very clever person who lived from 1921 to 2002. He was like a detective for fairness! He thought a lot about how to make societies, or groups of people living together, as fair as possible for everyone.
He wrote big books that made lots of people think about justice. He believed that everyone should have the same chances and that if some people had more than others, the people who had less should still be okay. He wanted to make sure everyone was treated with respect.
The Invisible Hat Game!
John Rawls had a super cool idea called the 'original position.' Imagine you're going to be born into a new society, but you get to wear a special 'veil of ignorance' – like a hat that hides who you'll be! You don't know if you'll be rich or poor, strong or weak, or even what your favorite color will be. From behind this veil, you have to decide the rules for your new society.
John thought this game would help people choose fair rules because they wouldn't want to make rules that could hurt them later!
Fairness for All!
John Rawls thought that in a fair society, everyone should have the same basic freedoms, like being able to say what they think. He also believed in 'equality of opportunity,' which means everyone should have a fair shot at getting a good job or going to a good school, no matter where they start. And here's a WOW fact: He said that if there are any differences in how much stuff people have, the people who have the least should still get the most help possible!
It’s like making sure the smallest kid on the playground gets a turn on the swing.
Why John's Ideas Still Matter!
Even though John Rawls isn't alive anymore, his ideas are still super important today! Judges in courts and politicians who make laws sometimes think about his ideas when they are trying to make fair decisions. He helped people understand that making society fair isn't just a nice idea, but a smart and logical one.
His thinking helps us build communities where everyone has a chance to be happy and safe. He showed us that thinking about fairness is a big part of making the world a better place.
