Key Facts
Who Was This Explorer?
Imagine a captain sailing across a giant ocean to a brand new land! That was John Ratcliffe. He was born a long, long time ago, in the year 1549. He was a sea captain, which means he sailed ships all over the water. He was also one of the very first people to help start a place called Jamestown. It was a new town in America, and he was a big part of making it happen.
Captain of the New Town!
John Ratcliffe became a leader in Jamestown. He was like the boss, called a governor! He was the second person to be the president of the Jamestown colony. This was a very important job because he had to make sure everyone had food and was safe. He sailed ships and helped build the new town, which was a lot of hard work for everyone back then.
A Tough Winter
Life in Jamestown wasn't always easy. In the winter of 1609, things got very, very hard. The people who lived there before the settlers, called the Pamunkey, were very upset. Sadly, John Ratcliffe was captured by the Pamunkey people. They were very angry, and they hurt him very badly. He died in the cold winter of 1609.
Remembering the First Settlers
John Ratcliffe was one of the first people to try and build a new life in America. Even though his story ended sadly, he was brave to sail so far and try something so new.
