Who Was John Major?

Imagine being the captain of a big ship! John Major was like that for the United Kingdom. He was born a long, long time ago, on March 29, 1943.

For seven years, from 1990 to 1997, he was the Prime Minister, which is like the most important leader of the country. Before that, he helped other leaders make big decisions. He used to work in an office, but he loved talking about politics and helping people.

From School to Downing Street!

John Major didn't always love school. He left before he was 16! But he was super smart and worked hard.

He joined a group called the Young Conservatives and became really good at talking to people and making plans. He even became a councilor, which is like a local leader for a small area. Then, he got elected to be a Member of Parliament, which means he got to go to the big building in London where all the important decisions are made!

Big Decisions and Brave Moments!

As Prime Minister, John Major had to make some HUGE choices. He sent British soldiers to help in a big conflict called the Gulf War. He also helped make a very important agreement called the Maastricht Treaty.

He even had to help the country when money got a little wobbly! One time, he made a really brave decision to take the pound, which is like the UK's money, out of a special money system. This was called 'Black Wednesday'!

A Leader Who Listened

John Major was known for being a bit quieter and kinder than some other leaders. He wanted to make sure everyone felt heard. He created something called the Citizen's Charter, which was all about making sure people got good services.

He also worked hard to help make peace in a place called Northern Ireland. Even after he stopped being Prime Minister, he kept writing books and helping charities. He's still around today, and he's the oldest living former Prime Minister!
