France: A Land of Castles and Kings!

John II was the king of France, a country in Europe with big castles and beautiful rivers. It's a place where knights once rode and kings made important decisions. France has lots of green fields and tall trees, perfect for farming and raising animals. The weather can be warm in the summer and cold in the winter, just like in many places. This land was where John II lived and ruled as king.

A King's Tough Times!

When John II became king, France had some really hard times. A sickness called the Black Death spread and made many people very sick. There were also angry people who started big fights, and soldiers who weren't part of the army but took things from people.

Even worse, England was fighting France, and King John was even captured in a big battle! It was like a really tough video game level for him.

The Great Escape (and Capture!)

King John was taken prisoner by the English and brought to London. To get him back, France had to pay a LOT of money, like a giant treasure chest full of gold! His son, Charles, was in charge while John was away. John was let go to help raise the money, but then he heard his son had escaped from being a hostage. So, John bravely went back to England to take his son's place!

Making Money and New Coins!

When King John was back in France, he wanted to make things better. He created a new coin called the 'franc' to help make sure everyone had fair money. He also tried to send away the soldiers who were causing trouble. He was a king who tried his best to fix problems, even when things were super difficult. He wanted France to be safe and strong again.
