Who Was John Brown?

John Brown was a super brave man who lived a long, long time ago, before the United States had a big war called the Civil War. He believed with all his heart that slavery was wrong and that all people should be free. He was so passionate about this that he became known as an abolitionist, which means someone who wanted to stop slavery.

He thought it was his special job from God to help end slavery in America.

Adventures in Kansas!

John Brown and his sons went to a place called Kansas. It was like a big playground argument because people couldn't agree if Kansas should allow slavery or not. John Brown didn't like people who supported slavery, and he was ready to fight! He led groups of people in battles, like the Battle of Osawatomie. He believed that talking wasn't enough; they needed to take action to make things right.

The Raid at Harpers Ferry!

One of John Brown's biggest plans was to raid a place called Harpers Ferry. He wanted to get lots of weapons from a big storehouse called an armory. His idea was to give these weapons to enslaved people so they could fight for their freedom. It was a very daring plan, but it didn't work out quite the way he hoped. He was captured and later faced a very serious trial.

A Hero or a Troublemaker?

After his raid, John Brown was put on trial and sadly, he was executed. But even after he was gone, people had strong feelings about him. Some people in the North thought he was a hero who bravely fought for what was right. Others, especially in the South, thought he was a dangerous troublemaker. His actions made people even more divided, leading closer to the Civil War.
