Meet the Behavior Boss!

Imagine a scientist who thought he could train a baby to be a doctor, a musician, or even a thief, just by controlling what the baby saw and heard! That was John B. Watson.

He was a super curious scientist who wanted to understand how people learn and why they act the way they do. He believed that our environment, meaning everything around us, is way more important than what we are born with. He was like a detective trying to solve the mystery of human behavior!

The Little Albert Experiment!

Watson did a famous, and kind of famous, experiment called the 'Little Albert' experiment. He wanted to see if he could make a baby afraid of a fluffy white rat. He showed the baby, Albert, the rat and then made a loud, scary noise.

Albert cried! They did this a few times, and soon, Albert was scared of the rat, and even other fuzzy things like his dad's beard! It showed how quickly we can learn to be afraid.

Why Do We Do What We Do?

Watson was super interested in something called 'behaviorism'. This is the idea that we learn most of our behaviors by interacting with the world. He thought that if you could control a person's experiences from the very beginning, you could shape them into almost anyone.

It's like building with LEGOs โ€“ you can make anything if you have the right bricks and instructions! He wanted to make psychology, the study of the mind, more scientific.

Watson's Big Ideas Today

Even though some of his ideas are debated now, Watson's work really changed how scientists think about learning and behavior. His ideas helped people understand how we learn habits, good and bad. It also made scientists think harder about how to do experiments ethically, meaning in a way that is fair and safe for everyone involved.

He made people think about how much our surroundings can shape who we become.
