Imagine a very important leader for a country called Ghana! That was John Atta Mills. He was born a long, long time ago, on July 21, 1944. He loved learning and became a smart lawyer and a professor. People liked him so much that they chose him to be their president, like the captain of a big ship. He started his job as president in 2009 and was ready to help his country for many years.
A Leader's Journey
John Atta Mills didn't become president right away. First, he was the vice president, which is like the second-in-command. He helped the president for four years, from 1997 to 2001. He tried to become president two more times but didn't win. But he never gave up! In 2008, he ran again and won the election. It was like winning a big race after trying hard many times.

President Mills was the first leader of Ghana to pass away while still being president. This was a very sad and surprising event. He was in office when he sadly died on July 24, 2012.
