When a Kingdom Broke Apart!

A long, long time ago, there was a big kingdom called Israel. It had a wise king named Solomon, but after he died, his son Rehoboam became king. Rehoboam wasn't very popular because he wanted to tax everyone even more!

This made the people very unhappy. Jeroboam, who had been away in Egypt, came back and told Rehoboam that the people were upset. But Rehoboam didn't listen.

So, ten groups of people decided they didn't want Rehoboam as their king anymore. They chose Jeroboam to be their king instead!

Jeroboam's Big Idea

Jeroboam had a special job to do. A prophet told him that God wanted him to rule over ten of the twelve tribes of Israel. When King Solomon heard this, he was angry and tried to catch Jeroboam!

But Jeroboam ran away to Egypt and stayed safe. When King Solomon died, Jeroboam returned. The people were tired of high taxes and unfair rules.

They asked Rehoboam to make things better, but he said no. That's when the ten tribes decided to break away and make Jeroboam their king.

A Big Fight for Freedom

Even though the ten tribes broke away, the fighting didn't stop right away. Rehoboam still wanted to be king of everyone. There was a big battle called the Battle of Mount Zemaraim.

Rehoboam's son, Abijam, fought against Jeroboam's army. It was a huge battle, and it's said that half a million soldiers from Jeroboam's side were lost! Even though Jeroboam's side lost this big battle, the two kingdoms, Israel and Judah, stayed separate for a very long time.

Two Kingdoms, Not One

So, what started as a disagreement about taxes turned into a whole new country! The land that was once one big kingdom of Israel was now split into two. One part was called the Kingdom of Judah, and Rehoboam was its king.

The other part was called the Kingdom of Samaria (or Israel), and Jeroboam was its king. These two kingdoms stayed apart for hundreds of years, even after the big battle. It shows how important it is for leaders to listen to their people!
