Who Were the Jena Six?

Imagine six friends who went to the same school. In a town called Jena, Louisiana, these six Black teenagers got into trouble. They were accused of hurting a white student named Justin Barker. This happened a long time ago, in 2006. People heard about this, and it became a really big story because some folks thought the punishment was too harsh and maybe not fair to everyone.

What Happened Before the Big Fight?

Before the fight, some strange and upsetting things happened at their school. Someone hung ropes that looked like nooses in a tree in the schoolyard. There were also fights between groups of kids, and the school building even caught fire! These events made people worried about how kids were getting along in Jena. It was a confusing time for the whole town.

A Big Protest for Fairness

Lots of people thought the Jena Six were being treated unfairly. They believed the charges were too serious, like trying to hurt someone on purpose. They also thought that if white kids did similar things, they didn't get in as much trouble.

So, people from all over came to Jena to march and show they wanted things to be fair for everyone. It was one of the biggest marches for fairness in a long time!

What Happened to the Six Friends?

After a lot of legal stuff, the charges for most of the friends were made less serious. One friend, Mychal Bell, was first found guilty of a serious crime, but then that was changed because he was too young to be tried like an adult. He ended up pleading guilty to a smaller charge.

The other five friends also pleaded guilty to the same smaller charge. It was a complicated situation with many twists and turns.
