Where is Hong Kong?

Hong Kong is a special place on the coast of China, like a big city with lots of tall buildings and busy streets. It's near the sea, which makes it a great spot for ships to visit. Before the occupation, it was a busy place where people from all over the world came to trade and live. It has a warm, humid climate, which means it can get very hot and rainy sometimes, especially in the summer!

A Surprise Attack!

One day, soldiers from Japan arrived and started a fight. It was a very tough battle for 18 days! The leader of Hong Kong, Governor Mark Aitchison Young, had to surrender the city to the Japanese on December 25, 1941. This meant Japan was in charge of Hong Kong. It was like a surprise visitor taking over your house and telling everyone what to do.

Three Years and Eight Months!

The Japanese stayed in charge of Hong Kong for a very, very long time. It felt like forever! They stayed for exactly three years and eight months. That's longer than you've been in school! This long time became a special way people remembered this period. Life changed a lot for everyone living there during this time.

When the Fighting Stopped

Finally, the big war that was happening all over the world ended. Japan surrendered, which meant they had to give Hong Kong back to the people who were in charge before. This was a huge relief for everyone in Hong Kong. The occupation was over, and life could slowly start to go back to normal, but the memories of those years stayed.
