Key Facts
Where is This Amazing Place?
Jamestown is in Virginia, a state in America. It sits right next to a big river called the James River. Think of it like a special spot on the edge of a giant playground. The land is green and sometimes gets warm and sunny, perfect for growing things. It's a place where the river meets the land, making it a great spot for boats to arrive and people to build their homes.
The First English Homes!
A long, long time ago, in 1607, English people sailed across the ocean to start a new town. They called it James Fort, and it was the very first permanent English town in America! It wasn't easy at first. They had to build everything themselves, from houses to forts. Sometimes they didn't have enough food, but they kept trying to make their new home work.
Who Lived There?
Lots of different people lived in Jamestown. The first settlers were English explorers and workers. Later, people from Africa also arrived, and they worked hard, often in the tobacco fields. Everyone had to learn to live together in this new place. They learned to grow crops and build things, and they even had leaders who helped make decisions for the town.
What Did They Do All Day?
People in Jamestown worked very hard! They grew crops like tobacco, which was a special plant they could trade. They also built houses and forts to stay safe. For a long time, Jamestown was the main city, like the capital, where important decisions were made. They learned to live off the land and build a new life far from their old homes.
