Meet the Boy King!

James was born a prince in Scotland. But guess what? He became king when he was only a tiny baby, just 13 months old! His mom, Mary, Queen of Scots, had to step down. So, grown-ups had to help him rule until he was older. He was raised to be a Protestant, even though his mom was Catholic. He got married and had kids, but sadly, not all of them grew up.

Two Crowns for One King!

When Queen Elizabeth I of England passed away, she didn't have any children. James was her cousin and was next in line! So, he became king of England too, in 1603.

This was super special because he was now king of both Scotland and England! He even started calling himself the King of Great Britain and Ireland. He wished the two countries could be one big country, but they kept their own rules and parliaments.

A King Who Loved Books!

James wasn't just a king; he was also a writer! He wrote books about ghosts and kings. He even helped create a famous version of the Bible that many people still use today. He loved stories and plays, and during his time, amazing writers like William Shakespeare were writing their famous plays. It was a time of lots of creativity and new ideas!

Did He Always Get His Way?

Ruling two countries was tricky! In Scotland, James was pretty successful. But in England, he had some big challenges.

There was a scary plan called the Gunpowder Plot to blow up the king and parliament! He also sometimes argued with the English parliament. Even though he wanted peace, some people in England wanted to go to war.

He was called the 'wisest fool in Christendom' because he was smart but sometimes made silly choices.
