Who Was General Longstreet?

Imagine a super-important helper to a famous general named Robert E. Lee. That was James Longstreet!

He was a general in the Confederate Army during a big fight called the American Civil War. General Lee thought so much of him that he called him his 'Old War Horse' because he was strong and dependable, like a trusty horse in battle. Longstreet was there for many of the most important battles, helping to lead the soldiers.

A Soldier From a Young Age!

Longstreet didn't just start fighting when the Civil War began. He went to a special school called West Point to become a soldier. He even fought in another war before that, called the Mexican-American War.

He got hurt in one battle, but he was brave! After that, he worked for the U.S. Army for many years, sometimes in faraway places.

When the Civil War started, he decided to join the Confederate Army.

Battles, Battles Everywhere!

Longstreet was in charge of lots of soldiers. Sometimes he helped win big battles, like the Seven Days Battles where he helped push the other army away from a city called Richmond. He was also in a very famous and difficult battle called Gettysburg. It was a tough time, and he didn't always agree with General Lee on how to fight. He also fought in battles in a place called the Western Theater.

After the Fighting Stopped

When the war was over, Longstreet didn't stop working for the country. He did important jobs for the U.S. government, like being a diplomat, which means he helped countries talk to each other. Some people were upset with him because he supported different ideas after the war and even worked with President Ulysses S.

Grant, who had been his enemy in the war. But later, people realized he was a very smart and skilled general.
