Fun Fact
James II was the last Catholic king of England, Scotland, and Ireland!

King James's Big Kingdom!

James II was a king who ruled over England and Ireland, and also Scotland! Think of it like being the boss of three big playgrounds. He was born a long, long time ago, in 1633.

His dad was King Charles I, and his mom was Queen Henrietta Maria. James was the second son, which meant he wasn't supposed to be king at first, but things changed! He became king when he was 51 years old.

That's like being a grown-up for a really long time before getting a super important job!

A King Who Loved His Church!

James II had a special religion called Catholicism. But most people in England and Scotland followed a different religion, called Protestantism. This was a bit like having a classroom where most kids love pizza, but the teacher really, really loves tacos!

James wanted everyone to be able to practice his religion, but the people and their leaders in Parliament didn't want that. They were worried about too much power for one religion, especially one that wasn't the main one.

Uh Oh, A Baby King!

When James II became king, people were a little worried but mostly okay. But then, something happened that made everyone very nervous. James had a baby son!

This meant the next king might also be Catholic, and people really didn't want a whole line of Catholic kings. It was like thinking the next class president might change all the playground rules to only favor one game. This made people decide they needed a change, fast!

Bye Bye, King James!

Because people were so worried about the king's religion and his son, they asked his nephew, William, to come and be king instead. William arrived with an army, and James's own soldiers didn't fight for him! So, James decided to leave his castles and go live in France.

It was a big change, and it meant that Parliament, which is like the country's big meeting place, became much more powerful than the king.
