James Brien Comey Jr. embarked on a distinguished career in law, culminating in his appointment as the seventh Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) from 2013 to 2017. His professional trajectory showcases a deep engagement with the American legal system. Prior to leading the FBI, Comey held significant positions within the U.S.

Department of Justice. He served as the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York from 2002 to 2003, a role that placed him at the forefront of prosecuting high-profile federal crimes.

Subsequently, he ascended to the position of United States Deputy Attorney General from 2003 to 2005, the second-highest-ranking official in the DOJ. Comey then transitioned to the private sector, serving as senior vice president and general counsel for Lockheed Martin, a major defense contractor, and later as general counsel for Bridgewater Associates, a prominent hedge fund. He also held academic positions, including a fellowship at Columbia Law School, before returning to public service to lead the FBI.

Comey's directorship is indelibly marked by his handling of the FBI's investigation into Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server during her tenure as Secretary of State. The investigation scrutinized whether classified information was mishandled. Comey's decision to publicly announce the FBI's findings in July 2016, stating that while Clinton and her colleagues were "extremely careless" in their handling of sensitive information, no criminal charges would be recommended, was met with widespread debate.

The controversy intensified when, just eleven days before the 2016 presidential election, Comey informed Congress that the FBI was reopening the investigation based on newly discovered emails. This late-stage announcement was widely seen as having a significant impact on the election's outcome, drawing criticism from Democrats and praise from Republicans, and raising questions about the FBI's impartiality and the timing of such disclosures.

On May 9, 2017, President Donald Trump abruptly fired James Comey. The official justification cited Comey's handling of the Clinton email investigation, referencing a critical report by the Department of Justice Inspector General. However, many observers and commentators suggested that Comey's dismissal was also linked to his role in the FBI's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election and potential ties to the Trump campaign.

Following his termination, Comey's actions regarding memos he wrote detailing private meetings with President Trump became a focal point. He allegedly arranged for a friend to leak one of these memos to the press, which detailed Trump's alleged request to end the FBI's investigation into Michael Flynn. This leak and the subsequent Congressional testimony by Comey were interpreted by some as evidence of obstruction of justice by President Trump and became a significant element of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation.

The aftermath of Comey's tenure saw further official reviews. The DOJ Inspector General's reports acknowledged that Comey violated FBI policy by retaining and disseminating sensitive memos, though they found no evidence of classified information being shared. These findings led to the Department of Justice declining to prosecute him.

However, the Inspector General also concluded that Comey's actions violated DOJ policies, FBI policies, and his employment agreement. Despite these policy violations, a separate Inspector General report in December 2019 found no evidence of political bias by Comey or other FBI officials in their handling of the Russia probe, though this conclusion was met with criticism from some DOJ officials.
