Key Facts
Who Was President Garfield?
James A. Garfield was the 20th president of the United States. He was president for a short time, only about four months! Before becoming president, he was a teacher, a lawyer, and even a general in the army. He was born a long, long time ago, in 1831, and grew up in a small cabin. He loved books and learning so much that he went to college and became a preacher and a teacher himself!
From Cabin to Congress!
James Garfield started life in a tiny log cabin, which is like a small wooden house. But he was super smart and worked hard. He went to college and then became a lawyer. He was so good at talking and explaining things that people wanted him to represent them. He was elected to Congress nine times, which is like being chosen to speak for your state in Washington D.C. over and over again!
A President's Big Ideas
Even though his time as president was short, Garfield had big ideas. He wanted to make sure the government was honest and fair. He also believed that everyone should get a good education. He even proved a famous math idea called the Pythagorean theorem all by himself! That's like solving a super hard puzzle in school and showing everyone how it's done.
A Sad Ending
Sadly, President Garfield was shot by someone who was angry about not getting a job. He was very sick for a few months, but he didn't get better. He passed away in September 1881. Even though he was president for a short time, people remember him for his smarts and his desire to do good things for the country.
