Meet the Wonderful ITV!

The ITV, also known as the Ivory-billed Woodpecker, was a truly magnificent bird. It was about as long as a school ruler and had a striking black and white pattern. Its most amazing feature was a big, bright red crest on its head, like a fancy hat! Sadly, these incredible birds are thought to be extinct now, meaning there are none left in the world.

Where Did They Live?

These special woodpeckers used to live in the deep, old forests of the southern United States, especially in places with lots of big, dead trees. They also lived in Cuba, an island country south of Florida. They loved forests with swamps and rivers because they needed big trees to find their food and build their nests.

What Did They Munch On?

The ITV was a carnivore, but not in the way you might think! It didn't hunt other animals. Instead, it used its super strong beak to peck into dead trees and find yummy bugs and their larvae hidden inside. They especially loved beetles. They would tap-tap-tap to find the best snacks!

Why Are They So Special?

The ITV was famous for its loud call, which sounded like a tinny trumpet or a nasal 'yank-yank'. It was also known for its beautiful appearance and its amazing ability to carve out large nesting holes in trees. Seeing one was a rare and wonderful sight, and many people hoped to spot one!
