Key Facts
Why Did They Start Fighting?
Long, long ago, Iran and Iraq had disagreements about where their border was. Think of it like arguing over who gets to play on which side of the playground! Iraq also worried that Iran's new ideas might spread to their country.
They thought Iran was getting too powerful and wanted to be the boss of the whole Persian Gulf region. Iraq hoped to win quickly because Iran had just gone through a big change and seemed weaker.
The Big Fight Begins!
In 1980, Iraq sent its army into Iran. At first, Iraq made some progress, like taking a few steps forward. But soon, the Iranian army pushed back! They were super brave and got all their land back. Then, Iran even started fighting back on Iraqi land! The war went on and on, like a really long game of tag that nobody could win. It was like a giant tug-of-war that lasted for years.
What Was It Like?
This war was very tough. Soldiers dug trenches, like in old movies, and used barbed wire to protect themselves. Sometimes, soldiers would charge at each other!
Iran used many soldiers at once, like a big wave. Iraq even used special, dangerous gases. It was so long that it made both countries very tired and sad.
Sadly, many people lost their lives, more than the number of kids in a very, very big school.
How Did It End?
After eight long years, both Iran and Iraq were exhausted. They had spent so much money and energy fighting. The United Nations, which is like a big club of countries trying to keep peace, helped them agree to stop fighting. The war ended with no winner and no big changes to their borders. It was a sad time, and both countries lost a lot.
