Key Facts
Meet Iocaste, Jupiter's Tiny Friend!
Imagine a giant planet like Jupiter having lots and lots of little friends that follow it around. Iocaste is one of these friends, called a moon! It's super small, much smaller than our own Moon.
It's so small that it's only about 5 kilometers, or 3 miles, across. That's like the length of about 50 football fields lined up! Iocaste is a rocky moon, not made of ice or gas like some other moons out there.
How Fast Does Iocaste Zoom?
Iocaste is a speedy moon! It orbits Jupiter really, really fast. It takes less than one Earth day to zip all the way around the giant planet. Think about how long it takes you to go to school and come back β Iocaste does a whole lap around Jupiter in about that time! It's like a tiny race car on a giant track, always going super fast.
Where Does Iocaste Live?
Iocaste lives in a very special neighborhood in space: the planet Jupiter! Jupiter is the biggest planet in our whole solar system, so big that all the other planets could fit inside it. Iocaste is one of Jupiter's many moons, and it's part of a group of moons that are a bit farther away from Jupiter than some of its other moons. Itβs a rocky world, not like the giant gas planet it orbits.
Who Found This Speedy Moon?
This little moon was found by scientists using big telescopes. They were looking very closely at Jupiter and its many moons. It was discovered in 2003. Scientists are always looking for new things in space, and finding tiny moons like Iocaste is like finding a tiny pebble on a huge beach. It helps us learn more about our amazing solar system.
