When Animals Are NOT Nice to Babies!

Key Facts
Uh Oh, What's Happening Here?
Imagine a mommy or daddy animal hurting its own baby, or another animal's baby. This is called infanticide, and it's a sad but real thing that happens in the animal world. It's not like when a lion eats a zebra; this is when animals hurt babies of the same kind of animal. It happens in tiny bugs, big bears, and even some birds! It's a tricky behavior that scientists study a lot.
Why Would They Do That?!
It sounds super strange, right? Sometimes, a male animal might hurt babies so that the mommy animal will have new babies with him instead. Other times, like when there isn't enough food, a parent might even eat its own babies to survive.
It's like if you were super hungry and there was only one cookie left, but instead of sharing, you ate it all, even if it was your little brother's! It's a tough survival choice.
Who Does This Scary Thing?
Lots of different animals do this! In the ocean, some fish parents might eat their own eggs if they get too many. In the jungle, male lions might kill cubs that aren't theirs so the lionesses will be ready to have babies with them. Even some tiny creatures like rotifers, which are smaller than a speck of dust, have been seen doing this. It's a behavior found all over the animal kingdom.
It's Not Always Mean!
Even though it sounds mean, sometimes infanticide helps the animal family or the species survive. When a male lion takes over a pride, killing the old cubs helps the lionesses have new babies faster. This means more babies that are related to the new male. It's a way for animals to make sure their own genes get passed on, even if it means a sad ending for some little ones.
