Giants of Asia!

Imagine an animal as tall as a big slide at the playground and as long as a school bus! That's an Indian elephant! They live in exciting places like India, Nepal, and Thailand. These gentle giants love to roam through tall grass and shady forests. They have big, floppy ears to help them stay cool and a super-long trunk that's like a handy fifth limb for grabbing food and drinking water.

What's for Dinner?

Indian elephants are mega-herbivores, which means they eat a LOT of plants! Every single day, they munch on about 330 pounds of yummy leaves, twigs, fruits, and grass. That's like eating your weight in snacks every day!

They use their amazing trunks to pick up even the smallest berries or to pull down branches from tall trees. Their diet changes depending on where they live and what's in season, just like how we eat different foods in summer and winter.

Super Strong and Smart!

These elephants are incredibly strong, but they are also very gentle. Males are usually bigger than females, standing about as tall as a small house. They have a special kind of back that curves upwards, and the highest point of their body is actually their head!

They have smooth grey skin and four big, sturdy legs that carry them through the forests. Their trunks are super flexible and can even pick up tiny objects like a single blade of grass.

Friends to People!

Indian elephants are super important to people in Asia. They are seen as special and are even part of religious stories, like the god Ganesha who has an elephant head! Because they are so loved, India has a special plan called Project Elephant to help protect them and their forest homes.

They are so special that they are called the national heritage animal of India and the national animal of Thailand and Laos!
