Key Facts
What's Growing Up There?
Imagine trying to grow yummy potatoes and corn on a super steep hill, like climbing a giant slide! That's what the Inca people did. They were amazing farmers who lived high in the Andes Mountains.
They figured out clever ways to grow lots of food, even when the ground was rocky and sloped. They grew over 3,000 different kinds of food, which is more than you can find in most grocery stores today! Their farms were like colorful patchwork quilts spread across the mountainsides.
Building Farms on Hills!
How did they farm on such steep places? They built special steps called terraces. Think of them like giant staircases for farming!
These terraces stopped the soil from washing away when it rained and made flat spots to plant. Some terraces were as wide as a school bus! They also dug canals to bring water from far away, like building a water slide for their crops.
This clever farming helped them feed a lot of people.
Super Foods from the Sun!
The Incas grew super important foods like potatoes and corn. They had so many kinds of potatoes, they could be red, purple, or yellow! They even had a special way to freeze-dry potatoes called 'chuño' so they could store them for a long, long time.
This meant they always had food, even during tough winters. They also grew quinoa, which is like a tiny super-seed packed with energy. These foods helped the Inca Empire grow strong.
Why We Still Care About Inca Farms
Even though the Inca Empire is long gone, we still use some of their amazing farming ideas today. Those terraces they built are still there and still working! Farmers in hilly places around the world still use similar methods to grow food without the soil washing away. The Incas showed us how to be smart about farming, even in tricky places. They were true nature wizards!
