Meet the Fancy Books!

Long, long ago, before computers and phones, people made books by hand. These special books were called illuminated manuscripts. 'Illuminated' means they were decorated with bright colors and shiny gold or silver. Think of them like the most beautiful, fancy picture books you can imagine, but made with special materials and lots of care!

Where Did They Come From?

These amazing books started appearing a very, very long time ago, between 400 and 600 years after Jesus was born. Most of the ones we still have today were made during the Middle Ages, which was a time between ancient history and now. People used them for important religious books and later for royal stories and laws.

What Were They Made Of?

Instead of paper like we use today, these books were often made from animal skins, like sheep or calf skin, called parchment or vellum. This made the pages strong and smooth. Sometimes, the books were tiny, smaller than a paperback book you might read, and other times they were HUGE, so big that two people would need to carry them!

Why Are They So Cool?

Illuminated manuscripts are super important because they are like windows into the past. They show us how people lived, what they believed, and how they created beautiful art. Many of these books are the only colorful paintings we have left from hundreds of years ago, making them like ancient art treasures!
