Key Facts
A Super Water Highway!
The Illinois and Michigan Canal was like a super-duper water highway built a long, long time ago. It was 96 miles long, which is about as long as 1,500 football fields laid end-to-end! This amazing canal connected the giant Great Lakes to the big Mississippi River. Think of it like a giant bathtub drain that let boats travel between them!
Boats on a Big Adventure!
Before cars and trains were everywhere, this canal was super important for moving things. Boats filled with goods would travel along it. They used locks, which are like giant water elevators, to go up and down hills. It helped Chicago become a super busy city because so many boats and people came through!
A Canal's Big Change!
The canal opened in 1848, which is even before your grandparents were born! For a long time, it was the best way to travel and send stuff. But then, bigger and better canals were built, and trains became super fast. So, the old canal slowly stopped being used for boats by 1933.
A Park for History!
Even though boats don't use it much anymore, parts of the canal are still there! It's now a special park called a National Heritage Corridor. You can visit and see the old locks and imagine what it was like when boats were busy traveling on this watery road. It's a place where history comes alive!
