Idolatry
Key Facts
What's an Idol?
Have you ever had a favorite toy or a superhero poster you loved a lot? Well, sometimes people in the past thought that statues or pictures of gods were super special. They would pray to them and give them gifts, thinking these statues could help them. This is called idolatry! It's like treating something that isn't alive as if it had magical powers or was a real god.
When Did This Start?
People have been making and worshipping idols for a very, very long time, even before written history! Ancient Egyptians built huge pyramids and worshipped many gods, often shown as animals or people. The ancient Greeks and Romans also had statues of gods like Zeus and Venus that they prayed to. These were some of the earliest examples of people worshipping things they made.
Why Did They Do It?
People might have made idols because they wanted to feel closer to their gods. Maybe they thought a statue of a sun god could help bring sunshine for their crops. Or a statue of a god of the sea could keep sailors safe. They believed these objects held special power and could help them with their problems or bring them good luck.
Different Beliefs Today
Today, many religions, like Christianity and Islam, teach that worshipping idols is wrong. They believe you should only worship one God who is invisible and everywhere. So, while some ancient people worshipped statues, many people now believe that only the one true God should be worshipped. It shows how beliefs about gods have changed over time!
