A City Divided!

Once upon a time, a city called Berlin was split right down the middle! One side was free, and the other was not. People on the sad side couldn't easily visit their friends and family on the free side. It was like having a giant fence in the middle of your playground, and you couldn't play with everyone. This made many people very unhappy and scared.

A President's Big Promise!

In 1963, a very important visitor came to the free side of Berlin. His name was President John F. Kennedy. He wanted to show everyone that the free world was thinking of them. He stood in front of a huge crowd, bigger than your whole school, and said something amazing in German: 'Ich bin ein Berliner!' This meant 'I am a Berliner!' He was saying he was one of them, no matter what!

More Than Just Words!

President Kennedy didn't just say he was a Berliner; he meant it with all his heart! He was saying that everyone who loved freedom was like a citizen of Berlin. It was a super brave thing to say because the world was a bit scary back then. His words were like a big hug for the people of Berlin, telling them they weren't alone.

A Famous Doughnut Mix-Up?

Some people think President Kennedy accidentally called himself a jelly doughnut! But that's not true! In Berlin, they call those yummy treats 'Pfannkuchen'. So, when he said 'Ich bin ein Berliner', everyone knew he meant he was a person from Berlin, standing with them. It was a powerful speech that made people feel hopeful!
