Key Facts
What's an Ice Storm?
An ice storm is like a winter surprise where rain falls, but instead of staying wet, it freezes into a hard, clear shell on trees, cars, and even the ground! It's not usually a big, windy storm, but more like a gentle rain that happens when the air is super cold, just below freezing. The U.S.
National Weather Service says it's an ice storm if at least a quarter of an inch of ice builds up. That's about as thick as a few fingernails stacked together!
How Does This Icy Magic Happen?
It all starts with special kinds of clouds. First, there's a layer of warm air high up where the rain forms. Then, this rain falls through a layer of very cold air near the ground.
If this cold air is below freezing, the raindrops don't have time to freeze into snowflakes. Instead, they become supercooled liquid. When these supercooled raindrops hit something cold, like a tree branch or a power line, they instantly freeze and stick, creating a smooth, glassy coating of ice!
The Sparkly, Slippery World
When an ice storm happens, everything can look really beautiful, like it's covered in sparkly glass! Trees can become heavy with ice, and their branches might bend or even snap. Roads and sidewalks become super slippery, making it hard to walk or drive.
Sometimes, the weight of the ice can even knock down power lines, which means lights can go out. It's like the world gets a temporary, icy makeover!
When Ice Storms Visit
Ice storms are a type of winter storm. They happen when the weather conditions are just right for freezing rain. While they might look pretty, they can cause a lot of trouble for people and nature. It's important to be prepared if an ice storm is coming, like staying inside and making sure you have warm clothes. These storms remind us how powerful and surprising nature can be!
