Key Facts

Total Water Volume
About 1.386 billion cubic kilometers of water on Earth.
Ocean Coverage
About 71% of Earth's surface is covered by oceans.
Saltwater vs. Freshwater
97.5% of Earth's water is saltwater, and only 2.5% is freshwater.
Frozen Water
Most of Earth's freshwater is locked up in ice and snow.

Meet the Watery World!

The hydrosphere is like a giant, watery blanket wrapped around our planet Earth! It's all the water you can find, whether it's in a big blue ocean, a tiny puddle, a fluffy cloud, or even frozen in ice. This watery world has been around for a super long time, about 4 billion years!

That's older than dinosaurs! Even though it's been here forever, it's always changing, like a giant watery puzzle moving around.

Where Does All This Water Come From?

Scientists think Earth's water has been here since the planet was born! Over billions of years, this water has moved around. Think of it like water in a bathtub that sloshes when you move.

The land on Earth moves too, and that makes the oceans and land change places. Most of the water on Earth is salty, found in the huge oceans. Only a tiny bit is fresh water, like in rivers and lakes that we can drink.

Why Water is SUPER Important!

Water is like Earth's superpower! Everything alive needs water to survive, from the smallest bug to the biggest whale, and even us! Plants need water to grow, and animals need it to drink. Water also helps keep our planet at just the right temperature, not too hot and not too cold. Without the hydrosphere, Earth would be a very dry and lonely place, and life as we know it couldn't exist!

Water, Water Everywhere!

Did you know that about 71% of Earth's surface is covered by water? That's more than two-thirds! Most of this is in the oceans, which are so big you can't see the end of them. But water is also hiding! It's in the air as invisible vapor, underground as groundwater, and frozen in icy glaciers at the North and South Poles. It's even inside living things, like you and me!
