Meet the Mighty Storm!

Hurricane Harvey was a super-strong storm that spun around in the ocean. It was like a giant, watery pinwheel! When it came onto land, it brought lots and lots of rain. This rain caused huge floods, like when your bathtub overflows, but much, much bigger. It was one of the strongest storms to hit the United States in a long time, and it caused a lot of changes.

Where Did Harvey Come From?

Harvey started as a small swirl of clouds far away over the ocean. It grew bigger and stronger as it traveled. First, it visited some islands called the Windward Islands. Then, it went back over the ocean and got even stronger! It grew so big that its winds were blowing as fast as a car on the highway, and it became a powerful hurricane before it landed in Texas.

Harvey's Big Surprise: So Much Rain!

The most surprising thing about Harvey was how much rain it dropped. In some places, it rained so much that it was like a swimming pool was dumped on the ground! It rained for days and days. This made rivers rise and streets turn into lakes. It was the wettest storm ever recorded in the United States, dropping rain that was taller than many grown-ups!

What Happened After the Storm?

After Harvey moved away, people had to clean up a lot. Many homes were flooded, and people had to leave their houses for a while. Rescuers had to help many people get to safe places. Because Harvey was so powerful and caused so much damage, its name was retired, which means it will never be used for another storm. It was a very important event.
