Hermit Crabs on Howland Island NWR

Key Facts
Where in the World is Howland Island?
Howland Island is a super tiny speck of land way out in the giant Pacific Ocean. It's so far away that it's almost exactly halfway between Hawaii and Australia! Think of it like a tiny dot on a giant map.
It's so small, it's only about as long as a few football fields and not much wider than a big street. It's a special place because it's a nature reserve, meaning it's protected for animals and plants.
A Special Home for Wildlife
This island isn't a place where lots of people live. Instead, it's a safe haven for birds and other amazing creatures. The whole island and the water around it are a protected wildlife refuge. This means no one can build big hotels or factories there. It’s like a giant, wild park in the middle of the sea, where animals can live peacefully without being bothered.
The Mystery of Amelia Earhart
Howland Island is most famous because a brave pilot named Amelia Earhart was trying to fly to it a long, long time ago. She and her co-pilot were flying around the world in an airplane. But sadly, they never made it to Howland Island and disappeared! There used to be a little airstrip there for them, but it’s gone now. It’s a mysterious story that makes people wonder what happened.
What's It Like on the Island?
There are no houses or shops on Howland Island. It's mostly sand and coral. There aren't any big harbors for boats, just a small spot on the beach where a boat can land. There’s even a little stone tower called Earhart Light, named after Amelia Earhart. Scientists visit every couple of years to check on the island and make sure the animals are doing okay.
