Key Facts
Meet the Stuart Superstars!
The House of Stuart was a super important royal family that ruled Scotland, England, and Ireland a long, long time ago. Their family name started because one of their ancestors was a special helper called a 'High Steward'. It’s like having a job title become your family name!
They were kings and queens from 1371 all the way until 1714. That’s longer than your grandparents' grandparents have been alive!
From Scotland to Big Kingdoms!
It all began in Scotland with King Robert II. Then, a queen named Mary, who was also called the Queen of Scots, moved to France and changed her name to 'Stuart'. Later, a king named James from Scotland became king of England too! This was a big deal because it joined two countries together under one ruler. It was like two big playgrounds becoming one giant park!
Kings, Queens, and Big Changes!
The Stuarts had many kings and queens. Sometimes, there were even two queens ruling together, Mary II and Anne. But then, things got a little tricky. The king at the time, James, had a baby boy who was going to be raised as a Catholic. Because the country wanted a Protestant ruler, they asked his daughters, Mary and Anne, to be queens instead. It was a bit like a royal game of musical chairs!
The End of the Stuart Reign
Queen Anne was the last Stuart queen. When she passed away in 1714, she didn't have any children to take over. So, the crown went to a different royal family called the House of Hanover.
Even though the Stuarts weren't kings and queens anymore, some people still believed they should be in charge, and they were called Jacobites. It’s like a team losing a game but still cheering for their favorite players!
