Key Facts
Meet the Japanese Senate!
The House of Councillors is like a super important club in Japan where grown-ups help make the country's rules. It's the upper house, which means it's one of two main groups that work together. The other group is called the House of Representatives.
Think of them like two teams working to make sure everything in Japan runs smoothly and fairly for everyone. They discuss and decide on important things that affect all the people living there.
A Long, Long Time Ago...
This special club wasn't always called the House of Councillors. A long time ago, before Japan had its current rules, there was a group called the House of Peers. The House of Councillors is like the new and improved version of that old group.
It was created to be a place where people could share their ideas and help guide the country. It has a history of being a place for thoughtful discussion and making sure different voices are heard.
Why They're Like Superheroes!
These councillors have a really important job! They help make sure that big decisions about money, agreements with other countries, and who becomes the leader are made carefully. Sometimes, if the two teams disagree, the House of Representatives can make the final choice, but only if lots of people agree.
This means the House of Councillors has a special role in making sure things are done the right way and that everyone's ideas are considered.
How the Club Works
Being a councillor is a big job! They serve for six years, which is longer than many other jobs. Also, only half of the councillors are chosen every three years. This means there are always experienced people in the club. To become a councillor, you have to be at least 30 years old. They are chosen in different ways, some from specific areas and some from a big list covering the whole country.
