Key Facts
Meet the Giant Bubble!
A hot air balloon is like a giant, colorful bag filled with warm air. This bag is called an envelope. Below it hangs a basket where people can stand and enjoy the ride. When the air inside the balloon gets warmer than the air outside, the balloon floats up, up, up! It's like a big, gentle kite that carries you through the sky. The biggest balloons can be as tall as a 10-story building!
When Did We Start Flying?
People have dreamed of flying for a very long time. The very first hot air balloon flight with people happened a super long time ago, in 1783, in France! Two brothers, Joseph-Michel and Jacques-Étienne Montgolfier, invented it. Their first balloon was made of paper and cloth. It flew for about 20 minutes, carrying two brave passengers. It was a huge moment for adventure and discovery!
Why Are They So Cool?
Hot air balloons are amazing because they let you see the world from way up high! You can look down at houses that look like toy blocks and cars that look like little ants. They don't have engines, so the ride is super quiet and peaceful. It's a special way to celebrate birthdays or just have a magical adventure. They are also used for fun festivals where many balloons fly together!
How Do They Float and Fly?
It's all about warm air! A special burner uses propane gas to heat the air inside the balloon's envelope. Warm air is lighter than cool air, so it makes the balloon rise. To go down, the pilot lets some of the warm air cool off or opens a vent to let hot air escape. To steer, the pilot uses the wind! They can go up or down to catch different wind currents that blow in different directions.
