Key Facts
Meet the Mighty Queen Mary!
The HMS Queen Mary was a super-duper big ship, like a floating castle! It was the very last battlecruiser built by the Royal Navy before a big war called World War I. Think of it as the final, awesome creation in a whole line of powerful ships.
It had eight giant guns, each as big as a small car, ready to defend the country. This amazing ship was finished in 1913, just in time for some exciting adventures on the sea.
Adventures on the North Sea!
The Queen Mary spent most of its time sailing in the cold North Sea. It was part of a big team of ships called the Grand Fleet. One time, it tried to catch some enemy ships that were being naughty and attacking the English coast. Even though they couldn't catch them that day, the Queen Mary was always ready for action! It was like a brave knight patrolling its kingdom, keeping everyone safe.
A Famous, But Sad, Day
The Queen Mary was part of a huge sea battle called the Battle of Jutland. It was the biggest fight of the whole war! Sadly, during the battle, another ship hit the Queen Mary twice. Then, its special gunpowder rooms, called magazines, exploded, and the ship sank very quickly. It was a very sad day, and most of the brave sailors on board were lost.
A Ship's Rest on the Seafloor
Even though the Queen Mary sank a long, long time ago, people found its wreck in 1991! It lies at the bottom of the North Sea, broken into pieces. Some parts are even upside down, like a puzzle that fell apart. Because it's a place where brave sailors lost their lives, it's now a protected spot, like a special underwater memorial.
