What Was the Soviet Union?

The Soviet Union was a super-big country, like a giant playground with many different parts. It was made up of 15 countries all joined together. For a long time, one main group of leaders made all the decisions. But in the years from 1985 to 1991, things started to change really fast, like a roller coaster picking up speed!

New Ideas for a Giant

A new leader named Mikhail Gorbachev came along with fresh ideas. He wanted people to be able to talk more freely and for businesses to have a little more freedom too. It was like saying, 'Let's try some new games on the playground!' These new ideas were called 'Glasnost' (which means openness) and 'Perestroika' (which means restructuring).

Things Start to Wobble!

As people got more freedom to speak, they started talking about all the things they wanted to change. The different countries inside the Soviet Union began to feel like they wanted to be on their own, like kids wanting to play in their own yards. This made the big country start to feel wobbly, like a tower of blocks that's about to fall.

The Big Goodbye!

Finally, in 1991, the Soviet Union officially broke apart. It was like the giant playground splitting into 15 smaller, separate playgrounds. Each country became its own independent nation. This was a huge moment, and it changed the map of the world forever!
