Where Did They First Arrive?

Imagine England a super long time ago, even before castles were built! Around 2,000 years ago, when Romans ruled England, some Jewish people might have come here. But then, things got a bit messy, and we don't know for sure if they stayed.

Later, about 1,000 years ago, after the big Norman Conquest, Jewish people from other parts of Europe started to settle in England. They brought new ideas and skills to the country, helping it grow and change.

A Big Change: Being Told to Leave!

For a while, Jewish communities lived in England, building homes and businesses. But in 1290, something sad happened. The King, Edward I, made a rule that all Jewish people had to leave England. This was a very difficult time, and for hundreds of years, there wasn't a big Jewish community openly living there. It was like a whole chapter of England's story was paused for a very, very long time.

Coming Back and Building Again!

After a super long time, about 350 years later, things started to change again! Around the 1650s, a leader named Oliver Cromwell allowed some Jewish people, who had come from places like Spain and Portugal, to live in England again. Slowly, more Jewish people arrived, and they started to build new communities.

They opened shops, worked as doctors and scientists, and became an important part of England's towns and cities.

England Today: Lots of Jewish Neighbors!

Today, there are many Jewish people living in England! Most of them live in big cities like London, but there are also communities in places like Manchester and Leeds. They celebrate special holidays, speak Hebrew and English, and have wonderful traditions. It’s amazing to think how this community has grown and changed over so many centuries, making England a more interesting and diverse place!
