Key Facts
Long, Long Ago: The First People!
Imagine a time so long ago, even before dinosaurs! People lived in what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo as far back as 90,000 years ago. Later, around the 14th century, amazing kingdoms like the Kongo, Luba, and Lunda popped up.
These kingdoms were like big families with kings and queens, living in powerful cities south of the big, green rainforest. The Kingdom of Kongo was super big, covering a huge area, and its capital city was called Mbanza-Kongo.
When Ships Sailed In!
Around the 15th century, brave sailors from Portugal arrived in the Kingdom of Kongo. At first, it was exciting, and the king became stronger because of trading with them. But sadly, this also led to a very difficult time.
For many years, people were taken from their homes and sent across the ocean, like a sad journey that lasted for hundreds of years. This happened to millions of people, and it was a very dark chapter in history.
Explorers and a King's Big Idea!
In 1870, a famous explorer named Henry Morton Stanley came to explore this land. A king from Belgium, King Leopold II, heard about it and wanted to claim it for himself. He sent people to build forts along the big Congo River. By 1885, he called it the Congo Free State. It was a huge place, and it took a long time to control it all. They even built a train to help move things around!
A New Country is Born!
After many years, the people of Congo wanted to be free, and in 1960, they became an independent country! But it was a bumpy start, with some parts trying to break away. Later, a leader named Mobutu took charge and changed the country's name to Zaire.
He wanted everyone to have African names. After many more changes and even wars, the country is now called the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It's a story of a nation finding its way!
