History of the Caribbean
Key Facts
Welcome to the Sunny Islands!
Imagine a string of beautiful islands sparkling in the ocean, like jewels scattered on blue velvet. That's the Caribbean! For thousands of years, people have lived here, sailing between islands and building amazing communities.
These islands have seen explorers, traders, and families all making their homes in this tropical paradise. It's a place with a long and exciting story, full of adventure and discovery.
Who Were the First Islanders?
Long, long ago, before anyone else arrived, the first people to call the Caribbean home were the Taíno. They were skilled farmers and fishermen who lived in villages. Later, other groups like the Kalinago also settled here.
They traveled by canoes, which were like boats made from hollowed-out trees. They knew the waters and the islands very well, making them great sailors and explorers of their own special world.
When Explorers Sailed In!
A very famous explorer named Christopher Columbus arrived in the Caribbean in 1492. He was looking for a new way to Asia but found these islands instead! After him, many other Europeans came, like the Spanish, French, and British.
They were interested in the resources on the islands, like sugar and spices. This changed the lives of the people already living there and brought new people and cultures to the Caribbean.
Islands Connected by the Sea
The sea has always been super important in the Caribbean. It's like a giant highway connecting all the islands. People used boats to travel, trade goods, and share ideas. Even today, ships and boats are vital for bringing food, people, and all sorts of things to the islands. The history of the Caribbean is a story of people connecting with each other across the beautiful blue ocean.
