Fun Fact
The word 'colony' comes from the Latin word 'colonia', which meant a settlement or farm.

Long, Long Ago: When People Moved!

A super long time ago, even before your grandparents were born, people loved to explore! Some people from places like Phoenicia, Greece, and Rome sailed their boats to new lands. They would set up little towns, like building a new playground in a different park.

These were like the very first colonies, where people from one place started living in another. It was a way to share ideas and resources, but also to claim new territories for their home country.

Sailing to New Worlds!

Then, around 500 years ago, brave sailors with amazing new ships called caravels set sail! These ships were faster and could go farther than ever before. They wanted to find new ways to trade with faraway places like Asia.

They discovered lands nobody from their home country had ever seen before, like the Americas! This was a big deal, like finding a whole new continent on a map. These journeys led to many new colonies being built.

Building Big Empires!

Countries like Portugal and Spain were the first to build huge empires that stretched across oceans! They sent people to live in places like the Caribbean and Africa. Later, England, France, and the Netherlands joined in, creating their own big empires.

They built settlements and traded goods, but sometimes they took land and resources from the people who were already living there. It was like one group taking over another's favorite toys.

Changing Times, New Countries!

After a while, many of these colonies wanted to be free and make their own rules. This happened in places like the Americas, where countries became independent. Later, more countries in Africa and Asia also became independent. It shows how people always want to have their own say in how they live. The world map changed a lot as new countries were born!
