Key Facts
What's a Candle Anyway?
Imagine a little stick that glows! That's a candle! It has a string called a wick in the middle, and when you light it, the wax melts and the wick burns, giving off light.
Long, long ago, before we had electricity to flip a switch for light, candles were super important. They helped people see in the dark, read stories, and even have parties! People made them from different things they found around them, like animal fat or special tree wax.
Candles from Around the World!
Candles weren't just made in one place. In Europe, people used animal fat called tallow or special bee wax. In China, they might have used whale fat or wax from a special tree. Japan had its own tree wax, and India used wax from boiling cinnamon for temple candles. It's like everyone had their own secret recipe for making light!
How Did They Make Them?
Making candles was a bit like crafting. First, they'd get a wick, which is like a string. Then, they'd dip it into melted wax or fat many, many times. Or, they'd roll soft wax around the wick. Later, people got clever and started using molds, like cookie cutters, to make candles in fun shapes! Finally, machines were invented to make tons of candles super fast!
Candles Then and Now!
Candles were the main way to light up homes for thousands of years. They helped people do all sorts of things after the sun went down. Even though we have bright electric lights now, people still love candles! They use them for birthdays, to make their homes smell nice, or just for a cozy, warm glow. So, candles have a long and bright history!
