What's a Calendar Anyway?
Imagine you have a super important playdate, but you don't know when it is! That's where calendars come in. They are like a special map for time, helping us know when it's a birthday, a holiday, or just time for school. People have been making calendars for thousands and thousands of years, even before there were any schools or playgrounds!
Super Old Time Detectives!
The very first calendars were made by people who watched the sky very, very closely. They saw how the sun moved across the sky each day and how the moon changed shape. Some of the oldest calendars we know about are from places like Scotland and Australia, and they are over 10,000 years old! That's older than any dinosaur you can imagine!
Moon Power and Sun Power!
Many early calendars used both the sun and the moon. They would count the days by the moon's phases, like a sliver, a half-moon, and a full moon. But they also knew that the sun helped plants grow and made the seasons change. So, they had to figure out how to make the moon days fit with the sun days, which was tricky!
Calendars for Everyone!
Over time, different groups of people made their own calendars. The Romans made a calendar that was pretty close to ours, and they even added a special day every four years called a leap day. Today, most of the world uses a calendar called the Gregorian calendar, which helps us all agree on what day it is, no matter where we are!
