Meet Emperor Hirohito!

Hirohito was the 124th emperor of Japan, which is like being the king of a whole country! He was born a long, long time ago, in 1901. He was the emperor for a super long time, from 1926 all the way until he passed away in 1989.

That's longer than your grandparents, and maybe even your great-grandparents, have been alive! He saw Japan become a very strong country and go through big changes, both happy and sad.

A Prince's Big Trip!

When Hirohito was a prince, he got to go on a very special trip! He traveled to the United Kingdom and other places in Europe. This was the very first time a Japanese prince had ever traveled so far away from home. He also became the leader of Japan, called the regent, because his dad was not feeling well. Then, he married Princess Nagako, and they had seven children together!

Japan's Big Adventures

During Hirohito's time as emperor, Japan became very powerful. Sometimes, this meant Japan got into big arguments and even wars with other countries. He was the emperor when Japan fought in a huge war called World War II.

After the war ended, Japan was very different. Then, something amazing happened! Japan became super good at making things like cars and electronics, and its economy grew really fast.

The Emperor's New Role

After World War II, the rules for being emperor changed. Hirohito was no longer seen as a god. Instead, he became a symbol for the country and for all the people of Japan. He was like the heart of Japan, showing everyone they were united. He remained emperor until he died in 1989. His son, Akihito, became the next emperor after him.
