Meet the Island of Hierro!

Hierro is a super special island, the smallest of the Canary Islands, which are islands off the coast of Africa. It's like a little green gem in the big blue ocean! It's not very big, about the size of a small town, but it has amazing nature. Think of tall cliffs, green hills, and even underwater volcanoes! It's a place where nature is really in charge.

A Long, Long Time Ago...

Long, long ago, Hierro was made by fiery volcanoes erupting from the sea! It took millions of years to form. People first came to Hierro a very long time ago, maybe even before your grandparents' grandparents were born! They learned to live with the island's nature, farming and fishing. For a long time, it was a quiet place, visited by sailors and explorers.

Hierro's Superpower: Clean Energy!

Hierro has a really cool superpower! It wants to get ALL of its electricity from nature. It uses wind from big windmills and water from a special pumped-storage power plant.

When it's windy, the windmills make electricity. If there's too much wind, they use the extra power to pump water uphill. Then, when the wind stops, they let the water flow down through a turbine to make electricity again!

It's like a giant natural battery!

Why Hierro is So Important!

Hierro is important because it shows the world that we can use nature to power our lives without hurting the planet. It's a living example of how to be kind to the Earth. Scientists and people from all over the world visit Hierro to learn about its clean energy. It's a small island making a big difference in how we think about power and the environment.
