The herring fishery opened today... it is controversial in these parts ... for sure, as in most parts of the world stocks are down etc. However it is exciting to watch natures interaction.

Meet the Speedy Silver Swimmers!

Imagine a fish that's about as long as your hand! That's a herring! These little fish are covered in shiny, silver scales that sparkle in the sunlight.

They have two fins on their back, one on their belly, and a tail that helps them zoom through the water. Herring are super fast swimmers, which helps them escape bigger fish that want to eat them. They love to live in big groups called schools, where thousands, or even millions, of herring swim together like a giant, shimmering river in the ocean!

Where Do These Fishy Friends Live?

Herring are ocean explorers! They live in the cool waters of the North Atlantic and North Pacific oceans. Think of all the water between North America and Europe, or between Asia and North America – that's where you might find them!

They like to swim near the coast, where there's lots of food for them to munch on. Sometimes they swim deep down, and sometimes they come closer to the surface, especially when they are looking for tasty snacks or trying to stay safe in their big schools.

What's on the Herring Menu?

Herring are not picky eaters! They are omnivores, which means they eat both plants and tiny animals. Their favorite snacks are tiny little creatures called plankton, which are like super small sea bugs and plants floating in the water.

They also love to eat tiny shrimp and the eggs of other fish. They use their mouths to scoop up these tiny morsels as they swim. It's like they are always having a tiny buffet as they travel through the ocean!

Why Are Herring So Important?

Even though herring are small, they are super important! They are like a yummy meal for many bigger ocean animals, such as seals, dolphins, bigger fish, and even seabirds. If there weren't enough herring, these other animals wouldn't have enough to eat!

People also eat herring, and they have been an important food source for humans for a very, very long time. They are like the building blocks of the ocean's food chain, helping to keep everything balanced and healthy.
