Key Facts
Who Was King Henry IV?
Imagine a king who was once a prince, but not just any prince! Henry was born a long, long time ago, on December 13, 1553. He became king of a place called Navarre and then later, the King of France!
He was known as 'Good King Henry' because he wanted everyone to get along. He was the first king from a special family called the Bourbons. He was a super important king who helped make France a stronger and kinder country.
A King Who Wanted Peace!
When Henry was a boy, France had lots of arguments between people who believed different things about religion. Henry was raised as a Protestant, but he knew that to be a good king, he had to make sure everyone, Catholics and Protestants, could live together peacefully. He famously said, 'Paris is well worth a Mass,' which meant he was willing to change his religion to bring peace to his big city, Paris.
He made a special rule called the Edict of Nantes to protect everyone's right to believe what they wanted.
Building a Better France!
King Henry IV wasn't just about peace, he was also a builder! He wanted France to be a great place. He helped farmers grow more food, encouraged people to start businesses, and made sure roads and bridges were built so people could travel easily.
He even started the first French towns in a faraway land called America! He wanted France to be strong and happy, and he worked hard to make that happen for all his people.
A King Remembered Forever!
Sadly, some people didn't like King Henry's ideas for peace. In 1610, a man hurt him very badly, and he died. But even though he's gone, people still remember him as 'Good King Henry' or 'Henry the Great.' He showed everyone that a king could be kind, brave, and work hard to make sure all his people felt safe and happy, no matter what they believed.
His ideas helped France become a very important country.
