Key Facts
Meet the Emperor Who Wore a Crown!
Henry IV was a big deal a long, long time ago! He was the Holy Roman Emperor, which meant he was like a super-king over a huge area. He was born in 1050, a time when castles were everywhere and knights were brave. His dad was also an emperor, so Henry grew up knowing he'd be in charge someday. He became king when he was just a little boy, and then later, he became the emperor!
Adventures and Arguments!
Being king wasn't always easy. When Henry was young, some important people even took him away! As he grew up, he had big arguments with the Pope, who was like the boss of the church. Henry wanted to pick church leaders, but the Pope said no. This caused so much trouble that Henry had to go on a long, cold journey to ask the Pope to forgive him. It was like a very serious time-out!
The Famous Walk in the Snow!
One of the most famous things Henry IV did was walk to Canossa. He traveled all the way to Italy in the winter of 1077. He took off his shoes and walked in the snow, wearing only a simple shirt, for three whole days! He was trying to show the Pope how sorry he was. This made the Pope let him back into the church. It's a story people still tell today!
A King's Life and Legacy
Henry IV ruled for a very long time, over 50 years! He had sons, and sometimes they argued too. His own son even made him give up his crown! Henry IV died in 1106.
