Henri Désiré Landru was a man who lived a long time ago in France. He was very good at pretending to be someone he wasn't. He would put ads in the newspaper looking for friends, but he had a secret, scary plan.
He was like a magician, but instead of making rabbits appear, he made people disappear! He was known as the 'Bluebeard of Gambais' because he was so mysterious and a little bit frightening.
How He Played His Tricks
Landru would write letters to lonely women, especially those whose husbands were away fighting in a big war. He promised them love and a happy life. Once they trusted him, he would take all their money and then, sadly, he would make them disappear forever.
He was very sneaky and kept careful notes about everyone he met, like a secret diary of his tricks. It’s like he had a secret map of his deceptions!
A Big Mystery and a Scary Secret
After Landru was caught, the police found letters from hundreds of women he had talked to! They couldn't find seventy-two of them. It was a huge mystery what happened to them. Landru's house was like a puzzle box, and the police had to put together many clues to figure out what he had done. He was so good at hiding his secrets that it took a lot of work to uncover the truth.

Landru's story is famous because it was like a real-life mystery movie! Lots of people were very curious about what he did. His trial was a big event, and even famous people went to watch. Even though he never showed anyone the bodies, he was found guilty. His story is a reminder that we should always be careful and trust our feelings when meeting new people, especially online or through ads.
