He helped President Abraham Lincoln during a really tough time called the Civil War. Hannibal Hamlin was born a long, long time ago, in 1809, and he was a lawyer before he became a politician. He was also the very first Republican Vice President ever!
From Maine to the White House!
Hannibal Hamlin grew up in a state called Maine, which is way up in the northeast corner of the USA. He started his career as a lawyer and then became a politician, first in Maine and then in Washington D.C. He was so good that he was elected to the House of Representatives and then the Senate, which are like big clubs where important decisions are made.
He believed that slavery was wrong and joined a new political group called the Republican Party because they felt the same way.
