Gulliver's Travels
Key Facts
Meet Lemuel Gulliver!
Gulliver's Travels is a super fun book about a man named Lemuel Gulliver. He's a doctor who loves to sail the seas! On his adventures, he lands in some very strange places. First, he washes up on an island where everyone is super, super tiny, like dolls! Then, he visits a land where everyone is HUGE, like giants! It's like a real-life adventure story with amazing twists and turns.
Tiny People, Big Problems!
In the land of Lilliput, Gulliver is like a giant mountain to the people there! They are only as tall as your thumb. They tie him down with ropes, but he's so strong he breaks free. Gulliver helps them win a war against their enemies by pulling their ships with ropes. But sometimes, the tiny people get mad at him for silly reasons, like accidentally stepping on one of their houses!
Giants and Tiny Horses!
Later, Gulliver visits Brobdingnag, where everything is HUGE! The people are as tall as a house, and even the animals are gigantic. Gulliver feels as small as a bug! He's kept as a pet by a giant farmer. He sees tiny horses that are actually very big, and he has to be careful not to get stepped on. It's a world where he's the little one!
Why We Still Read It!
Gulliver's Travels was written a long, long time ago by a man named Jonathan Swift. It's a fantasy story, but it also makes us think. By showing Gulliver in these strange lands, the author was making fun of some of the silly things people did in his own time. It teaches us to look at ourselves and wonder if we are being kind and smart, or just silly!
